What Remote Hiring Means For Your Business

Many of us have adapted to remote work and working outside of the traditional office space. As our day to day work routine changes, it also means that we way we hire has also been greatly impacted. In the past, recruiting for new employees meant in-person interviews and introductions to the team. But since the shift in how we work, this is no longer the norm.

Instead many employers choose to conduct interviews online and can build teams internationally.

But what does this mean for recruiting and hiring?

More job applications

Remote hiring increases job applicant interest. This is because candidates from all over the world can apply for the same role regardless of where they live. Previously before the shift to remote working, this would have not been possible and many recruiters were restricted to a specific location within commuting distance to find new talent. A whole new pool of talent has been opened and can help fill those skill gaps.

Flexibility in a candidate-driven market

“Right now, if you’re not offering a flexible or remote program, you’re missing out on 50% to 70% of candidates,” says Rey Ramirez, co-founder of Thrive.

Flexible working leads to a greater work-life balance and can promote a positive impact on personal wellbeing. Candidates look for roles that offer flexible working times (something which is a massive bonus for working parents) and remote working. In turn, flexibility improves productivity, promotes a positive work-life balance and overall greater job satisfaction.

Video interviews

Introducing the right technology to help conduct a video interview is a key component of remote hiring. Without the right tools in place, it’s difficult to manage multiple different interviews consistently and find the right talent for each role. Video interviews replicate traditional in-person meetings, with the hiring manager and candidate both present. This method speeds up the hiring process, makes scheduling easy and often integrates with your ATS and HR software to track candidate progress.

Video interviews can also be used to screen candidates before a virtual face to face meeting. Applicants will pre-record their answers and the hiring manager can assess all responses from the same interview questions. A faster option than manual telephone interviews, which also promotes fair interview practice.

Added pressure to build a strong employer brand

Many companies will feel increased pressure to improve the employer brand when operating as a remote team. Before the rise in remote work businesses would showcase their company culture inside the office as part of their brand to attract new employees. However a shift in the way we work calls for new ways to promote the employer brand.

Here’s how you can achieve a strong brand presence remotely:

  • Improve your careers site. This is a chance to show off the latest vacancies, work perks and even testimonials from current employees.
  • Create brand consistentcy and spread the right message through social media. Its free to post and has the potnetial to reach millions of people, so choose the right platform(s) that work well for your brand.
  • Communication. Maintain a good level of communicaiton throughout the hiring journey through regualr job updates and build a strong candidate experience.
